Walz, FBI Director Patel Claim Credit for Minneapolis Fraud Raids

(MENAFN) Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and FBI Director Kash Patel both publicly claimed responsibility on Tuesday for federal law enforcement operations carried out in the Minneapolis area, which targeted suspected fraud cases.

Federal agents were observed by reporters conducting raids on multiple businesses across the Twin Cities region, including several childcare facilities that have recently been under investigation. The operations reportedly focused on establishments with Somali ownership as part of broader fraud inquiries.

Walz said the enforcement actions were based on information shared by state authorities with federal agencies, emphasizing cooperation between different levels of law enforcement.

"If you commit fraud in Minnesota you’re going to get caught — and that’s exactly what we saw today. We catch criminals when state and federal agencies share information. Joint investigations work, and securing justice depends on it," he said on the US social media platform X.

He further stated that the raids resulted from state-level detection of irregularities that were then referred to federal partners, arguing that such coordination is essential for enforcement efforts.

"Today’s raids by state and federal law enforcement happened because our state agencies caught irregular behavior and reported it. That’s how the system is supposed to work, and our agencies will keep at it as long as there are fraudsters around to put behind bars," he added.

However, FBI Director Kash Patel disputed Walz’s account, accusing him of attempting to claim credit for federal operations.

"Come again? This FBI and DOJ with our DHS partners drafted and executed every search warrant today. But go ahead and take credit for our work while we smoke out the fraud plaguing Minnesota under your governorship," he said in response to Walz’s statement.

The competing claims highlight tensions over attribution for the coordinated law enforcement actions, as both state and federal officials emphasize their roles in the ongoing investigation.
